Here's a couple of "RADIANT FIRE HEATERS"
ANTIQUE HEATER, ANTIQUE GAS
HEATER, ANTIQUE HEATER PARTS, ANTIQUE HEATER RADIANTS
In April of 1901, Alfred Humphrey left
his family's business and started General Gas Light in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He
had invented an inverted gas light and opened a business to manufacture the new
gaslights. The inverted flame allowed light to be reflected down rather than the
standard gaslights with the flame up. The plant eventually took up a full city
block in Kalamazoo and produced over 60,000 lamps a year. When Mr. Edison and
his electric light bulb became the common thing in use, Alf Humphrey went back
to the drawing board and invented the Humphrey Radiant-fire gas heater using the
same technology. It again was a success and ads for the heater were seen in
national magazines like the Saturday Evening Post. During World War II, General
Gas Light switched to making military material such as gun sights for aircraft
and other parts. After the war, Humphrey went back to gas heaters and revived
the gas lamps for campers and propane use. A short surge also came with the
Alaska oil boom in the 1970's, when General Gas Light had singing radio ads in
Alaska advertising the lamps. During the 1950's management foresaw the demise of
gas heating and lighting and found a new industry to grow. It was pneumatics.
Humphrey started with pneumatic valves and grew over the years to manufacture
many types, sizes and varieties of valves and cylinders for all sorts of OEM
applications. A new plant was built on the edge of Kalamazoo, Michigan and it
also has grown with the company. There are now over 400 employees still
producing valves and cylinders for pneumatic applications. The name was changed
from General Gaslight to Humphrey Products in 1979 when most of the gas business
was divested. /
